I was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder II. Throughout my diagnosis I’ve realized that stigma isn’t always something of which you’re a victim, but something that can also be internalized. I am a student in Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa and even prior to my own diagnosis, I’ve been passionate about mental health. People who have mental health problems aren’t always sick, but they make themselves “crazy”, so to speak, when they think of what kinds of effects their illness could have on their lives. Self-stigmatisation can be very harmful.
